Things are looking up in 2008! How I know this is to look back 20 years to 1988 when Brelon-Page started in business during that "rough patch".
I'm no historian, but I remember the 25% stock market crash of October 1987, and the reports of recession were all around. The downturn was real, but not long lasting, and not surprisingly, the U.S. economy rebounded and had growth in many areas! You may remember that unemployment rate in 1988 was 5.7% (November 2007 at 4.7%); in 1988 gasoline gas was $1.10/gal. (currently about $3.27/gal.).
The year 2008 is off to a good start and business is back in full swing! Yes the housing downturn and credit crises has dampened growth, but corporate earnings and profits are strong overall. The federal monetary policy is working and quick to respond. The growth outlook for the second half of 2008 is predicted to be upturned, according to many economist surveys! Employment growth and hiring is expected to be good with some sectors in high demand, such as engineering, computer science, and accounting fields.
The analysis of this survey, is simple really! The time is good to take stock of your career portfolio. The time is good for career advancement. The time is good to seek promotion opportunities. Many continue to be be fulfilled within their current employer. Others will get promoted based upon their initiative and hard work. Some will grow beyond what their current job offers, and may seek new stimulation and greater challenge elsewhere. Career development takes active... not passive participation! If you want to excel then YOU must be the instrument of change. This conventional wisdom usually holds true: "Work hard, take pride in your performance, and you'll be rewarded!" Remember there is no such thing as luck, the Roman philosopher Seneca said this: "Luck is where preparation meets opportunity!"
